When it comes to acne, the typical treatment approach has been primarily topical solutions. While this approach is important, the true solution to the problem lies far deeper and requires a multi-faceted approach. As a Naturopath I have been conditioned to always look for the root cause of the problem and as a result we have developed a protocol designed to focus on the primary cause of Acne.
Working with over 1000 estheticians throughout the country we are seeing numerous cases of acne exasperated by the extended use of face mask. The face mask contributes to the concentration of common bacteria found in the nasal mucosal surfaces in the nasopharynx and oropharynx (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Hemophilus influenzae, and Staphylococcus aureus) and the oral cavity (Porphyromonas gingivalis). Wearing facial masks for a prolonged period increases the level of pathogenic bacteria and provides them a direct route to the dermis. These pathogenic bacteria are then swallowed in higher concentrations contributing to an imbalance of pathogenic bacteria in the gut microbiome that directly influences the integrity of epithelial tight junctions causing leaky gut. Leaky gut syndrome is a condition affecting the cells lining the intestines. This “gut reset” allows the leaky gut to heal and thereby prevent easy access of pathogens and toxins to organs and structures elsewhere in the body.
Acne is caused by inflammation of the skin, and particularly affects the sebaceous glands which produce sebum, the skin’s natural oil that keeps it lubricated. Excessive sebum and dead skin cells block skin follicles (appearing as blackheads). These blocked pores are breeding grounds for further infection and inflammation. Spots develop as papules (red bumps) and pustules (whiteheads). Although there are various factors that may trigger acne including hormonal, dietary and environmental factors, the impact of gut health should also be a major consideration.
We have 2 problematic scenarios at the same time, one being direct contact of the pathogenic bacteria with the skin, and secondly pathogenic bacteria breaking down tight junctions, resulting in a loss of the intestinal cellular barrier integrity (leaky gut) while changing the microbiome into a less diverse, more pathogen-dominated flora. These pathogenic bacteria generate a substantial amount of toxins that are released into the blood stream via leaky gut and with skin being a route of elimination is exposed to these toxins from internal source.

Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide Nebulization
Reduce constant exposure to pathogenic bacteria and viruses through nebulization and oral irrigation with diluted Food Grade Hydrogen Peroxide nebulization and oral rinse formula. Hydrogen peroxide is literally present everywhere in the body, both inside the cells and in the extracellular spaces. When hydrogen peroxide has been metabolized, only water and oxygen remain. Also, while hydrogen peroxide is known to kill all pathogens, it is especially effective against viruses encountered via respiratory routes, which is the case with all cold and influenza-causing viruses, including coronaviruses.
Pathogens have high levels of reactive (unbound) iron inside them, and it is a process of electron donation from iron to hydrogen peroxide inside the pathogen-filled cells or inside the invading pathogens themselves that forms the highly destructive oxidizing agent known as hydroxyl radical. Hydroxyl radicals quickly kill pathogens and also readily destroy cells that are already heavily laden with pathogens.
Because of this ability of hydrogen peroxide to generate hydroxyl radical in iron-filled pathogens, along with vitamin C it serves as a primary way in which the body mounts a natural defense against infection. In every sense of the word, hydrogen peroxide is the body’s natural antibiotic.
Food grade hydrogen peroxide typically comes in concentrations greater than 3% and must be appropriately diluted. Hydrogen peroxide in a concentration greater than 3% should never be nebulized.
Note that the first few partial inhalations might not be well-tolerated, but these initial inhalations effectively “coat” the mucous membranes with the hydrogen peroxide and Halo mist, and subsequent inhalations are not only well-tolerated but relaxing.
As it is a completely nontoxic therapy, Halo Oxidative Therapy nebulization can be done as often as desired. If done on a daily basis, a very positive impact on bowel and gut function will also often be realized, as killing the chronic pathogen colonization present in most noses and throats stops the 24/7 swallowing of these pathogens and their associated toxins.

Nutritional support with Super C with Elderberry
Activated phagocytes responding to a site of infection and inflammation naturally generate massive amounts of hydrogen peroxide into the extracellular space to help deal with the pathogens. Very interestingly, phagocytes also have high concentrations of vitamin C, which can help supply the electrons to hydrogen peroxide via the free iron present to form hydroxyl radicals. Also, vitamin C is known to help generate increased amounts of extracellular hydrogen peroxide for better pathogen-killing.
Whenever available, Super C Complex plus Elderberry should accompany the hydrogen peroxide nebulization if any virus-related symptoms or acne are already present. Vitamin C and hydrogen peroxide are natural anti-pathogen partners, and one literally fuels the impact of the other. Furthermore, all infections deplete vitamin C stores in the body, which are essential for immune support and tissue integrity.
Importance of adequate levels of Vitamin D
A 2020 GrassrootsHealth study published in the journal Nutrients describes how vitamin D can reduce the risk of influenza infection by lowering the viral replication rate and reducing the pro-inflammatory cytokines that damage the lungs, leading to pneumonia.
Vitamin D also helps increase concentrations of anti-inflammatory cytokines that may help protect your lungs. The researchers recommended those at risk for respiratory infection take:
“10,000 IU/d of vitamin D3 for a few weeks to rapidly raise 25(OH)D concentrations, followed by 5000 IU/d. The goal should be to raise 25(OH)D concentrations above 40-60 ng/mL (100-150 nmol/L).” At these levels vitamin D3 should be accompanied by K2 MK-7 for balanced calcium metabolism.
Support the Microbiome
Following elimination of pathogenic bacteria, re-seed the gut microbiome with Biome ReBoot supplement. The gut can influence skin health through what is referred to as the gut-skin axis. As 70% of our immune cells are found in the gut, our gut microbes can affect the function of immune cells. Ideally this results in an increase in the production of anti-inflammatory messengers (cytokines) and a reduction of the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines. However, dysbiosis, an imbalance between friendly and more harmful bacteria in the gut, is frequently present in acneand can have negative effects on our immune responses.
Reduce oxidative stress – The body naturally produces what are called free radicals as a result of metabolic processes in the body. Antioxidants that we consume in our diets, for example in brightly colored fruit and vegetables, counteract these free radicals. However, there is often an imbalance with too many free radicals produced and not enough antioxidants to counteract their effects, and this is called oxidative stress. This excess of free radicals contributes to inflammation. In acne, there is an increase in oxidative stress and markers of oxidative stress such as hydroperoxide. These markers of oxidative stress including hydroperoxide have also been reduced by specific probiotics strains.
Bifidobacterium lactis HN019 can help address gut-related triggers of acne by helping to improve the health of the gut microbiome, reduce inflammation and manage occasional constipation.
- Lactobacillus acidophilus was one of the first probiotic bacteria to be used to help with acne. In one of the first ever clinical studies assessing the effects of probiotics on skin health, milk containing Lactobacilli was noted to improve the severity of acne.
Supporting this theory, one study demonstrated that the consumption of the probiotic Lactobacillus rhamnosus SP1 for 12 weeks resulted in a decreased expression of IGF-1 in the skin, and in an improvement of acne symptoms.
